What is romance?

When most people think of romance, they think of eyes meeting across a crowded room. They think of flirtatious batting of eyes, and tiny touches that take a person’s breath away. They think of long strolls, moonlight, flowers, and champagne.

But maybe this doesn’t describe how you met your significant other. Maybe you were friends for a long time until you both decided that you might as well start dating. Perhaps your eyes didn’t meet across a crowded room, but instead, you were introduced to your significant other by your mother. Or did you meet the love of your life after filling out a lengthy online dating survey?

Your “how we met” story may be downright unromantic. Does that mean you are destined to a life of chicken pot pie instead of chateaubriand? Does that mean you will receive daisies for your anniversary instead of long-stemmed roses? And what about your wedding and honeymoon? Are you destined for an unromantic honeymoon if you didn’t have a romantic start of your relationship?

Absolutely not! You can still have a romantic engagement, wedding, and honeymoon even if you started your life together in a somewhat dull way.

Here are some romantic ways to spend your honeymoon that will get you on the right path for the next 50 years.

  1. Find an all-inclusive location.

One way to ruin a romantic time is to have a fight about money on your honeymoon. If you visit one of your favorite cities for your honeymoon, one of you may want to splurge and buy an expensive meal at an exclusive restaurant. The other may think that spending hundreds of dollars on a meal is an extravagance that you can’t afford.

When you vacation at an all-inclusive location, you don’t have to think about how much money you will be spending on vacation because you will have already paid for it. Even the thriftiest person in your relationship won’t bat an eye at ordering another drink because it is included in the cost of the package.

2. Go to a beach destination.

Let’s face it. There are romantic locations scattered throughout America’s largest cities. If we have learned anything from movies, we have learned that being with your lover at the top of the Empire State Building is romantic. What they never show you in those movies is that the couple had to fight through crowds, traffic, and lines to make it to the top of the building.

Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco can be a romantic location as well, but you will pass dozens of homeless people and lots of traffic on your way to the bay-side location.

That’s why we think that a beach vacation is still the most romantic choice for a honeymoon. There’s no traffic, lines, or crowds. All that you will see are miles upon miles of long, pristine beaches as well as the turquoise blue water.

3. Try new things.

When you are in love, you are happier about life. You are more likely to open yourself up to new adventures. Having new experiences with your lover is romantic.

That’s why when you go on your honeymoon, you should find a place that allows you to try new things. Try SCUBA diving or learn to drive a jet ski. Go parasailing and kayaking. Go dancing on the beach at night and try new foods.

Experiencing these things together will give you a lifetime of memories. When you are old and gray, you will be able to think back on all the adventures and experiences you shared together.

4. Stay off your phones

Finally, if you want to have a romantic time with your loved one, agree to limit the amount of time you both spend on your phone. Consider giving the phone number of the resort to both of your parents and then turning off your phones for the duration of your trip. Instead of relying on your phone to take photos, bring along a camera for that purpose.

Having constant access to news and social media is a sure way to ruin the romance of a trip. It may feel strange at first, but after a few days, you will hardly miss it.

Life is full of responsibilities. You have to make a commitment to each other to keep romance in your marriage.
