There are a lot of different kinds of fabrics and materials that wedding gowns are made of. What are they? What do they feel like? How are they made?
Before booking your bridal fitting, here is a quick rundown of what materials and fabrics you’re likely to see:
Chiffon. Chiffon is a lighter, near-transparent fabric. It’s usually used as an accent piece or in layers. It is light and flowy, and makes an excellent gown for spring or summer weddings. Most chiffon is made from silk or rayon. Since this fabric is delicate, remember to handle it with care.
Lace. Lace is probably one of the most popular and universally loved materials for wedding gowns. It’s made from woven silk or cotton. Because of its versatility, lace is trendy in any season. Lace also has many different patterns, textures and weights.
Organza. Organza is similar to chiffon in that it is sheer and light. Organza, however, tends to hold more structure. It’s usually woven from silk, and is often layered on ballgowns or veils. Like chiffon, this material is very delicate and should be handled with care.
Pique. Pique is a waffle-weave knit fabric. This material is most often used in fitted gowns and constructed silhouettes. This is a heavier fabric, but the style looks beautiful in spring and summer weddings, too.
Rayon. Rayon is similar to silk, but it is more elastic and usually cheaper. Rayon is light and comfortable to wear especially in a summer wedding. This semi-synthetic material looks great, but can wrinkle easily, so keep that in mind when trying on Rayon gowns.
Satin. Satin is a smooth, shiny fabric. It’s typically made from silk and nylon, but can be made with polyester or another blend. Satin is one of the most traditional wedding gown materials, and can be found in many different dress styles. Its classic and chic style is adored year-round.
Tulle. Tulle is sheer, open and best resembles netting. Because this is a delicate material, it is often used as layers, lining or a veil. There are different weights and thickness, but Tulle is a good material that can be worn at any wedding.
